Cookies on the Move.

Looking for some ideas as you look to off load some Girl Scout cookies this season?  My daughter and I painted her lemonade stand changing it into a cookie booth for the season.  We had fun getting it ready and it was super cute when stocked with piles of cookies and adorable Girl Scouts from her troop outside the local markets. In addition to the cookie booths that she hosted with her troop we loaded our wagon and headed out to the streets to finish off the last of our stash.  Remember don’t underestimate the power of pig tails.  Cute scouts sell cookies!

Visiting the Mouse – Part 4

Part 4 Time to pack/hunt; things I brought from home…

You probaly have most of these items around your house already so there is no need to spend an additional small fortune on these items.  The key is to find them and set them aside in a designated place so you don’t forget them when it times to pack your bags.

You’ll need a good backpack (our son’s small LLBean one was good enough for the 4 of us.   We had to pull it out at every bus stop and bag check so pick a durable one.)

Large carabiner clip, like really large, mine is called Mommy’s helper it held 2 adult water bottles.

2 regular (2in) carabiner clips for attaching hats, hand sanitizer and kids water bottles to the stroller.

Mickey & Minnie ears (previously purchased).  I will say looking back the ears with the pretty veil was kinda cumbersome as they would blow around and get heavy on her little head and get in the way of certain rides.  Also you’re never to old for mouse ears so pack yours too.

IMG_3585

Time to have some fun pulling out any Disney themed jewelry you owned. It worked well because than my daughter was hunting for a new charm as her self-purchased souvenir.IMG_5556

Glow sticks, are super helpful for parade events, not getting your stroller tripped over as everyone leaves the fireworks display.

Water bottles for each person that could be clipped to stroller.  We used Nalgine as they did get bumped around every time we closed the stroller.  Make sure they are strong and close tightly.  You don’t want it to spill all over your autograph book.

Extra charger for cell phones and cameras.  Disney offers free wifi but, you use a lot of battery power snapping all those pictures and referencing the Disney App.

Pennies to toss in fountains- Disney than collects the pennies and gives them to a charity of the Cast’s choosing.  Don’t need a ton just a few.

Magnet to stick to hotel room door so we could quickly find ours and others traveling in our group.  Our dog passed away just a little bit ago so he’s become the private family signal.  I ordered this free from Shutterfly with a coupon.  Please don’t put a family photo on your door or pictures of your kids for safety reasons.  img_1017

Cup holder/sling came with stroller was very handy.  I also brought our own attachable one which was nice for the extra storage.IMG_5787

There are of course tons of other things that you can toss in your pile, just keep your eyes pealed as you move about your house.  I also use this method for my kids birthday parties.  Make a note to yourself to remember where you have hidden your stash.  🙂

Mantel Montage

2017 mantels

Another year and more mantle attempts. I will say I loved some of these, and other… well you’ll see.

January was fun with sparkle, white and blue. The details make it special, the more glitter the better.

Sweet and pink rolled in February.

Festive and fun rung in March. Featuring hand print shamrocks made by my kids.IMG_7053

April was a color burst of bright flowers. I wanted the big mirror to bounce as much light as possible around the room, especially after a long grey winter.

May the 4th be with you for all the Star Wars fans at our house.

June easy breezy blue and white. I love this handblown glass wave by Anchor Bend Glassworks it had to be my centerpiece.  It is actually my business card holder when I go to craft fairs.

July is my favorite and therefore I have lots to pull from.

And than there was August.  I took down July and didn’t get any father. We were too busy living life and enjoying summer that it never was done but it wasn’t missed we were home for a total of 6 days this month.

September; as I said last year it’s either back to school or football.  I figured I’d give football a try this year.  Remember re-purpose items you already have and you won’t break the bank.  The “field” is actually a table runner and the “flags” are kitchen hand towels with some “referee” tissue paper in a clear vase.

We have decided to sell our house so off we went to stage and prepare our house for October.  It had to be seasonal but not overdone. Classic and simple was the goal.  I missed using all my kids cute scary art work but it was no longer our house and was now a show piece.

I guess October seasonal and basic worked our house was under contract in November.  People were still coming and going a few replacements did just the trick to keep it fresh.

December ended up being the gathering place for all of our house plants so the packers didn’t send them off to storage. It’s was a pretty spot despite the sad goodbye.  Seems like it is only appropriate as this was the starting point for all the house plants and my mantel montages.  Our packers were there December 2nd so there wasn’t much time or reason to really break out holiday decorations.

This closes the chapter on mantle displays for now. Our new house does not have a mantel for me to get my creative on, but stay tuned I’m sure there will be something else to set those special items on.

The New Season-Cookies!

For those of you that aren’t aware, like I was last year. Once you become the parent of a Girl Scout you add a whole new season to the calendar.  Cookie season.  You have spring time, summer, the fall, the holiday season and than comes COOKIE SEASON.  Before the Christmas tree is even out the door your cutie is hustling your guests for pre-sales.

Now you probably think cool sell some boxes earn a patch.  If it was only that simple.  Now as a disclaimer; scouts are not required to participate in cookie sales nor do they have to sell tons of boxes.  This is the mindset I was going with.  This entire season is girl driven and my daughter’s initial goal was 30 boxes.  It snowballed from there.  She reached her goal by Christmas morning with just family.  She of course upped the goal and away we went.

Now for those of you that weren’t aware a percentage of each box sold goes to the girl in money that can be used to summer camps and outings. Another percentage goes to the girl’s troop to keep their dues low and pay for items like patches and craft supplies. I will say as the mom the camp credits was motivating to me to let the snowball keep rolling.

She had a fantastic summer at camp and made friends and lit her first match, she was SO excited. Those of you that embrace our cuties with their lists this season we thank you.

This post is purely from the perspective of a parent. Never mind those amazing parents that VOLUNTEER to be the troop or even biger Service Unit Cookie person. These people have begun their Cooke season well before we have. They have hearts of gold and way more storage space that I do.

An Elephant and Purple Glitter Birthday Party

Sweet, simple and special. Using elephants, glitter and the color scheme purple and grey for my little lady who’s turning 3 this year.  My dear friend Julia at the blog A Little Bee Told Me helped me out with the invitations, decorations, some of the stickers and labels.

Let’s set up and decorate.  This has to be one of my favorite steps.  I spend weeks collecting and thinking thru each area so to see it come together is just the best moment for me.  I often try not to buy items and just collect items that are already around my house.  It doesn’t have to be expensive to be special.

IMG_4729

I went a bit nuts and yes taped purple labels on the waters and used a cookie cutter for the peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.  But I will say because they were cute they didn’t last and were gobbled up.  You can also get a glimpse of the birthday girl in her purple tutu.  To read about her love of tutus click here.  I used a roll of paper under all the serving dishes.  It was a super cute and easy way to label all the food without having to put much work into it, just a purple marker.

This year’s dessert was, the classic, cake and ice cream.  I pre-scooped black raspberry ice cream into cup cake wrappers so it was easy to serve and looked cute on the plate.  Audra at Mad Hatter Bakery worked her magic and mixed up this beautiful cake.

IMG_4696

We had to complement the cake with some sweet treats.  My mother-in-love’s first attempt at cake pops and my first attempt at frosted rice krispy treats.  They were yummy and we both have be perfected their look over time.

Party favors were small and simple.  I actually used white boxes that were left over from our wedding hotel welcome packages.  They were perfect.  Printed the elephants on sticker paper and a sharpie marker and they were all set.

We’ve been very lucky to have such beautiful weather during our children’s birthday parties.  Being outside is such a part of childhood that, we welcome.  We are blessed with lots of family and friends so to fit them in our small house would be so comical.

Visiting the Mouse – Part 3

Part 3 Time to Shop things I purchased ahead of time…

Below is a long list of items that I purchased thru Amazon, our local bi-annual consignment pop up shop; Be Green Sale or from local stores.  I took my time, and enjoyed the hunting and gathering of all these fun little items.  I started long before our trip which allowed me to find the best deals, or be picky on colors.

Disney theme sweatshirt for each kid (lived in them. Plane rides, am & pm chill. It was still 78-85 degrees but cool at night).  Consider that these might become the uniform of your photos so get ones that you like and perhaps coordinate a bit.  I’m not saying matching unless you’re into that.  My kids wore a pink one with Minnie ears and a blue one with Mickey on it.  Of course the characters reacted so well to seeing my kids in them.

Ponchos– one for each person including the toddler.  They are small light and already packed.  We were super lucky and never had to use ours.  It only rained one night after we were back in our rooms.  Those Florida rains come in quick and heavy and leave just as quickly so better to be prepared.

img_7914

Lanyards to hold all those trading pins.  A fun Disney pattern is cool but they do fill up fast and plain colors work just as fine.  I found a 3 pack for $11.42 blue, pink and red. I loved ours they came with a little pouch so we could tuck those pins that slid off in until we got more backs. And I could slip a I’m lost card with info in the back clear pouch.  I also bought a 12 pack of extra backs. They are small and easy to loose plus they are unique so not all fit properly.

Starter pins for trading (found on Amazon 25 pins for $30 the 6 & 17 year olds were into it more than the 2.5 year old.  Honestly I put some pins I knew my daughter would like on my sons lanyard so she’d have to practice trading.

Spinning night time light up toys. The pirate one was $7.99 off Amazon and the Frozen one was from a local consignment sale and cost $5.00 (According to a friend it was $25 at Disney on Ice).  Best time to buy these is right after Halloween.

Stroller Lights–  Nothing like coming off a ride to a dark sea of strollers.  Well worth the money.  Also as you’re trying to navigate a double stroller towards the exit with 1,000’s of the others it’s nice for them to see you coming and not try to step across while you’re rolling a monster truck with you’re two kiddos sound asleep at 10:30pm.  Clip on bike lights work well too.  Please be considerate and turn them off during the firework displays.

Line Buster Games– 6 pack of wedding bubbles, Disney games and Heads Up game loaded on phone.  A Hidden Mickey app or book.  He’s all over the place in carvings, tapestries,  Cast member’s uniforms. Wikki Stix weird name cool toy.

Coloring pads– small little ones, you’re caring around sharpie markers why not get use out of them.  (of course if they can handle a sharpie) lollypops for poping ears on the airplane or again line busters.

I made a sign to identify our stroller in the sea of matching and rental strollers. I also spotted some other very creative people.  Had to snap and share a picture of theirs too.

Clip on Purelle to attach to stroller.  Oh so handy

Individual packaged wet wipes

Disney signature book–  These are so expensive in the park and I doubt the first thing you want to do upon entering is hit the store for a signature book.  Also one zip lock bag that could cover the book in a Florida rain storm. Nothing more disappointing than a smeared keepsake.
Click sharpie markers multi colors (my daughter loved picking colors to match the character’s outfits).  According a secret source the characters like the click sharpies more too.  Easier to use if you’re wearing gloves and easy to close so after they hand it back to your kid they won’t accidentally rub it all over their costume.

Anything Mickey/Minnie was loaded into their backpacks ie lipsmackers, coloring books, dried apple snacks, stickers, hats etc.  I had found these crocks at a consignment sale a year prior it just happen to be perfect timing

Stuffed animal Mickey and Minnie, not the monster size but something manageable.

IMG_5616

Disney add-ons Princess crowns, wands, pirate hats; really anything to make your and your kids feel special.  I am known to rock a good tiara.

Disney World is a safe place, but I always recommend having your contact information located somewhere on your kids.  Write it on the back of their button which is likely to be attached to them or their lanyard full of trading pins.  I also packed the Kids ID bracelets that are simple and available thru my Etsy store.  For those days at the water park or are super sweaty use a ball point pen with Liquid Band-aid over it.  You can also order custom temporary tattoos that work well too.On Wrist

Zip-ties–  I know sounds weird but so helpful.  Our stroller sign kept falling off day one and zip-ties to the rescue.  The strap on my over the shoulder purse broke day 3 zip-ties to the rescue.  You don’t need a lot just a few in a few sizes.

All of the items were packed and brought down.  Yes it takes up room in suitcases going down but they take up just as much room upon your return.  Might as well save a few bucks.  I ended up spending about $270.00 before our trip and $40 in the park for souvenirs we just had to have.  My daughter and I bought new charms for our charm bracelets, twirly lolly pop a new pin for the lanyard, etc.

Duck tape can be so helpful for identifying so many things.  Cut a long strip Put a piece off old rag or paper in the middle and wrap it around a luggage handle trim cloth or paper to size makes a custom bag tag. Our stroller sign was made with duck tape and ribbon and a pre-made wooden frame from Michael’s Craft stores.

Have so much fun.  Remember don’t go overboard, as it is easy to do, and give yourself time so you can enjoy the shopping.  Happy Hunting.

P.S. Don’t forget where you squirrel it away.

Firemen & Dalmatians Birthday Party

Time to set the house a blaze for my little guy’s 3rd birthday party.  The pre-school TV show Paw Patrol is pretty big in our house right now and the dalmatian pup named Marshall has a place of honor.   That being said it made planning this party a snap.

We filled the windows of the house with construction cut outs of flames and filling his rain boots with flowers to help decorate.  I collected every fire truck and hat we owned and they became the centerpieces and accents throughout the house.

We sprinkled the walk way and front yard with flames cut out of foam that were glued onto popsicle sticks.  The kids had a blast using the water squirt extinguishers to try and knock them over.

The fun didn’t stop there as I took a stuffed animal cat (aka unicorn my daughter had) and tied a string around it.  The kids had fun climbing a step stool with the fireman dress up gear, we had so they could save the kitten in the tree.

After all the fun and games it was time to eat.  It was a simple meal with sandwiches and deli wraps.  I cut more flames out of foam for the cutlery, and used balloons that are actually cow print for dalmatians.

Cake time is easy and yummy with a sheet cake from our local market.

It was a sweet day filled with friends and family.  We thanked our guests for coming to celebrate with everyone taking home their own fireman hats and water squirt extinguishers.

IMG_7223Granted all this party fun happens on the weekends and on no school days, so on your actually birthday I have to send a special lunch into school and a visit to a real fire truck. IMG_7056

Visiting the Mouse- Special Adventures

There is just so much information when looking into special adventures at Walt Disney World.  In the hopes of not overwhelming my blog post about Time to Book & Plan your Fun I decided to break this out into an additional post.

Bippy Boppy Boutique & The Pirate’s League both can be booked 180 days in advance.  The Star Wars Jedi Training Academy at Hollywood Studios can only be booked for the day of by the a parent & CHILD being present when the gates open, sometimes as early at 7am. All of the special adventures are such great fun.  There are other types of special adventures but these seem to be the big three for kids ages 3-12.

At the Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, your little girl or boy will have their own Fairy Godmother-in-training who will give them a royal makeover at this beauty salon for children ages of 3 and 12. There are three different packages to choose from.  (2016 pricing). There are two locations for boutique one in Cinderella’s Castle at the Magic Kingdom as well as at Disney Springs. We went with Disney Springs at 4pm. It worked well as our dinner reservation were also in Disney Springs.

  • The Crown package ($59.95 + tax) includes hair styling, make-up with a face gem, nail polish, a princess sash and cinch backpack bag.
  •  The Courtyard package ($99.95 + tax) adds a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique T-shirt and tutu.
  • The Castle package ($199.95 + tax) adds a princess costume of your girl’s choice and accessories (excluding shoes).
  • A print photo package can be added to any of the packages for $32.95. If you opted for Disney’s Memory Maker, pictures taken during your girl’s transformation can be added to your account. Also with Memory Maker, you can take your daughter over to Castle Couture and have a Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique Studio photo session. There is no extra cost to have these pictures taken and added to your account.
  •  Assorted princess accessories and T-shirts are also available for purchase.

The amount of time needed for this magical transformation is 30-60 minutes, depending on the package and which of three hairstyle choices is selected.  You will only be allowed to have two additional people in the Boutique with your child.  For the Crown and Courtyard package you’re welcome to bring your own costume from home and will have a chance to put it on prior to getting the royal treatment. (Note the hairdo will last 1-3 days depending on care).  I will say that the grandparents provided this for our daughter as a special gift and my mother-in-love scored big at the local consignment sale with a gently used Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique T-shirt, bag tutu and extra sash, which we took with us and she wore the next day in the park.

Visiting the Mouse – Part 2

Part 2 Time to Plan & Book Your Fun at Walt Disney World

There are so many important dates to remember, it is easy to get lost.  Make sure you put these big ones in your calendar as they do approach so quickly.  This is a long post but filled with tons of information as I didn’t want to leave anything out.

We called a Disney meeting in the backyard during the summer which included dinner, drinks and a movie to keep little ears away.  We laid out a grid with thoughts as to a game plan each day and what park we’d like to go to when.  We all came with some homework done as to which park had the late night when, and what shows or special events were happening on which day.   This was everyone’s chance to get their must do’s on the board and to do our best to make it all fit.  We sat armed with cell phones, My Disney Experence App and computers so we could all look up a variety of questions that arrose.  All in all we talked for over an hour trying to make sure we didn’t leave any request or information off the list.   I will say, start to become familiar with the app as it is truly the most helpful tool while in the park once you dump all your data in it. It is linked between family members, reminds you of fastpasses+ and reservation as well as things you’ve marked and possible.

Special Adventures – Bippy Boppy Boutique & The Pirate’s League both can be booked 180 days in advance.  The Star Wars Jedi School at Hollywood Studios can only be booked for the day of by the parent & CHILD being present when the gates open, sometimes as early at 7am. All of the special adventures are such great fun.

There is just so much information when looking into special adventures at Walt Disney World.  In the hopes of not overwhelming my blog post here, I decided to break this out into an additional post which can be found by clicking here.

Dinner Reservations – Can be made 180 days in advance of arrival.  Book all character meals first as those fill the fastest.  I’d personally recommend at least one meal a day where you sit and relax to dine.

Fast Passes+– 60 Day prior to arrival.  Book ASAP they go so quickly.  Pick the 3 important things for your family each day and make sure those happen. It might be a sit down meal, seeing a princess, catching the fireworks, or a thrill ride. Know you won’t get to it ALL but a good plan helps see lots.  Plan the use of your passes in a logical direction noting where  you need to be for meals.  Don’t use passes for the first hour of park opening you’re likely to get on a ride in short order and you will have wasted a fastpass+ booking.

PhotoPass Memory Maker – I went against my better judgement and did not order this ahead of time. The package is available at a discount before you arrive but goes up the closer you get to arrival date. It is a such an easy and great program.  They snap some great photos, scan your bracelet aka Magic Band and they appear instantly on you phone with the My Disney Experience app. When you get home you can download them a bunch of times.

Strollers -Which would you rather roll in for the day?  Photo credit: Mom Endeavors. Kingdom Strollers worked out to be awesome for us.  I booked a city mini double.  It arrived clean, ontime and was great.  My 6 year old enjoys ridding and it was so much easier to just have both kids sitting safely when navigating crowded parks or late at night.  It was nice using the stroller from our hotel room door and back.  The park strollers have to be handed in prior to park departure where as we would keep ours as we stood in line for monorails, trams, and busses loaded with sleeping children.   The 2016 pricing for a double was $18 a day for Stroller Kingdom and $27 per day for the Disney stroller. (Note that if you keep your receipt and are using a park hopper you can show it at the next park and get another stroller.)

Groceries If you book Stroller Kingdom first you’ll receive a coupon for Orlando Groceries.  You have until prior to 72 hours before arrival to book and guarantee on time delivery.  My grocery list will appear in a latter blog post.

This only represents our trip there are tons of suggestions out there.  Have fun and enjoy the journey and adventures of Walt Disney World.

The Ultimate Day Camper’s Packing List

From a former camper, counselor, Camp Director and mom comes the real list you need when sending your kid to day camp this summer.

Before your kid leaves each morning, make sure the bag is packed and some things are taken care of to prepare them for an awesome day.
Read the Welcome Guide/ A-Z Guide or Welcome Email.  Nothing is more annoying than parents that show up 30 minutes after their bus leaves and say no one told them or parents who want to pay their site counselors the balance when they can’t accept payments outside the office.
Pre-camp lessons.  Some kids will make camp their first stop before heading to Kindergarten.  Your kid should be able to change them-self into and out of their bathing suit within 5 minutes.  They should know that once you take it off it goes strait into their backpack and not thrown around a locker room.  Have them practice packing their own bags and checking behind them as they leave a space to see if they got it all.  They should be able to eat lunch in about 20-30 minute window and master all juice boxes and cheese stick wrappers etc.
A Good Night’s Sleep.  You know your kid so let them get hit the sack early and be on their A-game.
Breakfast Fuel them up and get them ready.   All of their highly physical activities will burn a tons more calories than being at school.
Sun Screen I highly recommend doing this while your kid is in the buff or just in their bathing suit.  Use lotion to get all those places that will be exposed throughout the day and are hard to reapply to.
Bug Spray After they are dressed and ready for the day cover them from head to toe.   Extra sprays around the ankles and socks keep those ticks, and mosquitoes away.
☐ Do your daughter’s hair.  They will be sweaty, wet and it helps the spread of dreaded lice.  I find with my daughter, braids are best, they stay in longer and if the elastic breaks they might stay in place.  I really have no desire to play beauty salon in the AM for your kid and discourage my staff from doing it either.

The following list is intended as a guide for families. Please note that camper equipment need not be new and remember to write your camper’s name or initials on ALL camp gear and clothing!  This list is geared towards traditional outdoor day camps.

walking staff with campers

Come on slap your kid’s name on it!  The lost and found pile at your kid’s camp will be so massive by the end of the week it is crazy what people will just walk away from.  At some camps the parents will never see the pile so if it’s labeled we’ll make sure it gets tossed in their bags.  It is so much easier if you just label it once maybe twice.  I’ve also found that if you have things embroidered for cheap, staff will think they are more special.  We might shake our head, thinking you’re that parent, but you’re more likely to get it back.  Looking for some good products for labels or easy DIY options click here for my Back to School post that has links for permanent adhesive labels for purchase, free printable downloads and disposal cheap DIY options.  Full name is better than initials and even luggage tags work just fine.

☐ A Backpack that your camper can handle, they will be carrying it all day long.  Nothing worse than a counselor who acting like a Sherpa instead of teaching your kids camp songs and getting them to archery on time.  Some camps provide a location for bags during activities so make sure it zips close and can be stuffed in a cubby or tossed in a pile without loosing it’s contents.
Water bottle(s) are an absolute must.  There are two schools of thought pack one water bottle that can be refilled all day long.  (confirm the type of camp i.e. a boating camp may not be able to refill when on-board) or the other to send an AM and PM bottle.  The AM bottle should be iced and filled with cold water.  The PM bottle can be frozen.
☐ No-refrigeration-needed snacks and lunch (in reusable container or disposable brown paper bag) with beverage (water or juice).  Check with your camp, as some provide lunch, and or snack programs.  Try freezing some foods that will defrost in time for lunch it helps keep the rest cold as the morning heats up.  i.e. juice boxes, fruit cups.  Always pack heavy lunches, kids are so hungry spending a day in the sun moving and running.  Consider packing an AM and PM snack.  Check to see if your kid is attending a peanut-free camp.
Shirt guaranteed it will be covered in dirt, paint, grass, and shaving cream (yes, always a possibility)
Shorts or long pants
Socks
Underwear (to wear!)
Closed-toe shoes sneaker are the best.  Just like in school, only send tie if your kid can handle it.  Crocs, or Keen sandals are sometimes permitted at camp or on the water front. The big one is no flip flops, we mean it, no flip flops!  Nothing is sadder than having to tell a kid that they have to sit out of rec field or adventure course because they are wearing Crocs or old navy flip flops.

To pack in your backpack each day:
Sweater or sweatshirt.  Surprising the early am wait at a bus stop can be chilly.
Bathing suit & towel (needed each day).  Set aside 1-2 sets.  Buy 2 of the same, so staff gets use to kids in the same gear.  We do remember who has the orange pineapple towel, and will call your kid out when we pack up from the pool each day.  Also consider a rash guard shirt these are great coverage from the sun.
Baby Powder this helpful items when placed on wet and sandy feet will absorb the water allowing you brush off the sand and get dry sand-free feet back into socks and sneakers for the hike after fun at the beach.
☐ A wet bathing suit bag or zip-lock bag they make great new pouches that will keep the wet suit from getting everything else soaked.  If you don’t have the pouch a gallon zip-lock bag works just fine.
Clear Gallon Zip-lock Bag toss the baby powder, bug spray and sunscreen in it.  Chances are your kid will use their backpack as a seat in the dirt while waiting for the nature staff to explain the differences between moths and butterflies.  Save yourself the headache of internal explosions.
Rain gear (rain jacket or poncho.  Boots if they fit in the bag)  Having a kid at camp will force you to become a local weather watcher.  Some camps have rain sites and can do most stuff indoors some camps keep a regular rotation and just alter programs having campers still walk from place to place.  Ask your Camp Director or previous camp parents what the scoop is.
Sunscreen.  Send both lotion, spray and chap-sticks.  Campers will often share and hap haphazardly apply the spray.  Which will cause you to take out stock in your local drug store sunscreen isle.  Most camps do not encourage sharing for allergy reasons and will avoid having a counselor apply sun lotion to your child and instead encourage other campers to help each other.
☐ Non-aerosol insect repellent.
Hat or Visor consider tossing in sunglasses if your kid would wear them.
☐ Extra pair of underwear place these in a clear zip-lock bag that can live nicely on the bottom of the backpack.  (very helpful after the other camper unit sneaks up on your group with coolers full of water balloons.)
☐ Optional: Small amount of cash (approximately $5—$20) to purchase items in the camp store, aka Trading Post.  Check with your camp as they will probably only have a specific day of the week where they will get to visit the camp store/trading post so you don’t have to send it every day.  Plus if your kids tells you they need $20 every day they are either flat out lying or skipping the camp bus and heading to the arcade downtown.

colton-rv-camping-with-kids-01Additional Equipment for specialty camps
Life Jackets- Don’t forget to label them.
Field Trips– If your camp has a special camp t-shirt wear it!  It only makes your kids that much safer when in a large group.  If you’ve lost it put them in a similar color.  Gift Shop money.  Don’t bother, nothing is more annoying than a kid that has $4 and wants to get a $18 dolphin from the aquarium or the kid who has $25 and just spent the whole amount on sugar filled pixie sticks.  This isn’t the time nor place to have a lesson in personal finances.
Sporting Equipment i.e. cleats, pads, helmets etc.

Seriously people just don’t bring the following; crazy that we have to say it but you’d be surprised. The following items are prohibited at traditional day camp programs: iPods, cell phones, jewelry, electronic games, weapons, pets, illegal drugs, and alcoholic beverages. You’ve sent your kids to be engaged in something new, making new friends, learning a skill.  None of that is accomplished if they are scrolling the internet checking on their friends in another group or camp.  If you need them, you have the camp phone number and if they need you; we’ve collected it all during the mountain of paperwork you filled in, back in the spring at registration.

Once your kid gets home it’s time to…
☐ Empty and re-load the bag.  Check out the art project that just came home or the gods-eye they worked on all day, or the friendship bracelet they are making for someone.  Make sure you pay attention to the weekly calendar of events.  Is it a dress up theme day? Are you suppose to bring something special? Kids that participate in the theme weeks, dress up days or activities have by far more fun.  The counselors are more likely to naturally engage with your kid if they are sporting an awesome pirate map they made and rolled up with sticks.
☐ Get them cleaned up.  A tub/shower can do wonders as well as give your a chance for a tick check.
☐ Get them a good meal.  Remember camps now post on Facebook, website, Instagram or even email out some happenings of the day.  I always post some type of conversation starter for my camps.  Ask your kid at dinner specifics about camp, new favorite song, least favorite meal in the mess hall, most talented counselor.
☐ Than it is early to bed, to do it all again the next day.

My goal as a Camp Director is to send your kids home tired and dirty with a smile on their face.  If you’ve found something to be helpful or should be added to your camp’s specific list, email your Camp Director.  We spend all of December, January and February updating our packing list, and paperwork; and welcome honest feed back.

Make memories, make friends and have an awesome summer!
